A/Prof Richard L Young is a Senior Research Fellow in the Adelaide School of Medicine, University of Adelaide, and a member of the Centre of Research Excellence in Translating Nutritional Science to Good Health (2013-18, University of Adelaide).
He leads the Intestinal Nutrient Sensing Group at the South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), with support from the NHMRC, ARC and Diabetes Australia. His group investigates the intestinal sweet taste system, which senses sugars and artificial sweeteners beyond the tongue, and which can in turn, regulate the release of hormones that control glucose uptake and disposal in the body. He has shown changes in this system in human type 2 diabetes, critical illness and obesity, and its consequences for blood glucose control and nutrient delivery.
He collaborates with researchers and industry in this translational research to develop new therapies to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity.
