Dr Kerry O'Brien is head of Behavioural Studies at Monash University. His research seeks to establish the reasons for why many people discriminate against people who are obese/overweigh, in order to develop stigma reduction interventions. Specifically, his research examines the role of conservative ideologies, and how peoples own insecurities about their bodies (body image) may influence their negative explicit and implicit attitudes towards ‘Fat people’. He also examines employment discrimination against obese people, and conducted the first systematic review of the literature on obesity prejudice reduction studies, which showed the previously purported mechanisms underpinning obesity stigma (e.g., attributions), were not related to attitude change. He now examines more novel constructs in seeking to understand obesity prejudice.
