Sharon Brennan-Olsen

Dr Sharon Brennan-Olsen is a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC, of Australia) Career Development Fellow, and Head of the Health Equity Epidemiology Division (HEED), Deakin University. She holds conjoint positions with the Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Sciences, and the Australian Catholic University. Her research interests are the social determinants of musculoskeletal diseases and related health service utilisation, and more recently has been investigating biological mechanisms underlying the social gradient of musculoskeletal diseases. She has a strong record of knowledge translation activities that includes community, clinician and researcher engagement, and knowledge dissemination that has influenced behaviour change and layperson understandings of recommended guidelines for the prevention of musculoskeletal disease and the promotion of preventive testing. Since 2006 Dr Brennan-Olsen has published >100 articles in peer-reviewed journals (>30 as first author), and has been involved in attracting research grants exceeding $2.8million, in addition to her NHMRC Career Development Fellowship (2016-19), NHMRC Early Career Fellowship (2011-14) and NHMRC PhD Scholarship (2008-10). She is the recipient of a number of awards, the most recent including the Professor Philip Sambrook Award, from Osteoporosis Australia and the Australia and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society (2015), the Vice-Chancellor’s Early Researcher Award for Excellent Contributions, Deakin University (2014), the Annual President’s Poster Award, American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (2013), a Dyason Fellowship, The University of Melbourne (2012), an Early Career Researcher of the Year, Geelong Research Network (2012), and the RM Gibson Scientific Research Award, Australian Association of Gerontology (2011).
